Provenances of the Lear drawings of Mount Athos :
- locations, dates and sizes
- present and previous owners where known
- exhibition history
The purpose of this section is to help researchers and buyers and sellers of Lear drawings to establish all that is known about an individual drawing - size, location depicted, date and current and previous owners where known as well as any exhibition history. As Lear numbered many of the drawings and kept detailed lists of these, the numbering systems used are also given for each drawing. The following description of each line for each drawing applies throughout the list, and notes on how to use this follows.
Lear mount number
Lear main number
Lear separate number (to 38)
Number on drawing (if any visible)
Location illustrated
Date of drawing
Size
Present owner, provenance and other notes
The numbers in the first three lines for each drawing, the location titles (except some monastery spellings) and the dates are taken directly from Lear’s handwritten list of Mount Athos drawings held by the Yale Center for British Art. Detail in brackets under location is from a later source, not Lear’s list. The dates shown are from Lear’s list but almost always correspond with dates which he pencilled or inked on the drawings. The sequence of mount and drawing numbers on Lear's list begins from Salonica on 8 August and the first and second lines of each entry (on his list, shown above as Lear mount number and Lear main number) follow this sequence ending at mount 76 and drawing number 124 of Syra on 4 October. The mounts and numbers shown below only go to the end of his Athos visit on 26 September, although he continued by ship via Troy to Syra.
However between 29 August and 8 September Lear ran a separate numbering sequence alongside the main numbers on his list from 1 to 38 covering the initial part of his stay on Athos. These are shown in the third line of each entry. As will be evident many of the Athos drawings bear these numbers in his own writing (fourth line of each entry) but a small number up to 8 September bear the main sequence numbering where he presumably got confused with the two systems. On his list he has inscribed ‘marks on sketches’ at the start of the Athos separate numbering sequence.
L – reference to drawing in letter to Ann Lear (see Letters tab)
Ph - image available; DP - digital image available; most of these are shown under the Pictures tab.
FMT – this is the number of the drawing given in Edward Lear in Greece, thesis by Fani-Maria Tsigakou, University College London 1977.
TI – sketch number in Edward Lear's Tennyson, edited by Ruth Pitman (Manchester: Carcanet, 1988). Lear produced these sketches, based on his drawings, later in life to accompany some of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poems, a work he hoped to publish.

* Drawings auctioned from the estate of Miss Margaret Crum also have the following provenance :

By descent to his daughter, Mary Church;
Canon John McLeod Campbell Crum, a gift from Mary Church;
By descent to Miss Margaret Crum
